When we began our research on where to stay in Mallorca, we had one thing in mind: As remote and tranquil as possible, far away from the crowds of Palma and Ballerman, and – at best – as true to the essence of Mallorca as possible. Little did we know that we would discover what I now believe to be one of the most exceptional (if not the best) places I’ve ever had the pleasure of staying at.

Rondaia LuxuryLuxury Suites & Villas

Rondaia Suites & Villas is a 4.5-star luxury farm stay situated in Esporles, a rural area nestled in the mountains. While located only a few minutes from Palma city, Rondaia is also well-connected to the airport and the rest of the island, and stands at the gates of the scenic North Coast and the Sierra de Tramuntana. This idyllic location boasts an outdoor swimming pool, free private parking, a garden, and a terrace. The guest rooms at Rondaia Suites & Villas offer premium bedding, laptop-friendly workspaces, air conditioning and separate sitting areas, all of which are thoughtfully designed for maximum comfort.

The storystory behind Rondaia

The family that owns the estate named it after the Mallorcan tradition of Rondaia, which refers to stories and fables passed down from parents to children to showcase the island's rich cultural heritage and accumulated wisdom over centuries. Rondaia represents the warmth and hospitality of Mallorca and the Mediterranean lifestyle, embodying values of joy, rest, meeting, and loved ones. The traditional environment is designed to offer modern comforts while preserving its authenticity.

Rondaia is entertainment and it is humanity. Rondaia is also a symbol of joy, of a moment of rest, of meeting around loved ones, of music. Rondaia is, in essence, the reflection of the character of the Majorcans. The transmission of old values, but which are still valid and fully topical.

The Rondaia project is split into two phases. During phase one, the family planted an organic vineyard and constructed accommodations for agro-tourism on the farm. Each member contributed their unique knowledge, experience, and skills to create a small resort with luxurious suites and villas spread throughout several existing buildings. Phase two is currently underway with the installation of a winery to produce their own wines. The family hopes to expand the project further by offering wine tourism activities like vineyard and winery tours, wine tastings, participation in the harvest, training courses, and the creation of a club for wine enthusiasts.

Location & Estate

Rondaia is located on the Sa Simentera de Canet farm established on a historical possession called Canet that occupied a significant portion of the San Pedro valley. A ditch called Baster or Bastera runs through the farm, transporting water from a nearby mine (qanat) to Palma city. The farm has constructed large water storage pools for irrigation during the driest seasons and takes pride in its inland seas. Sa Simentera de Canet was known for its orange production during the mid-20th century, and the farm still has some of the original orange trees, which are almost a century old. However, the orange grove has been replaced by vineyards, and the farm now focuses on producing autochthonous grape varieties, such as Malvasía de Banyalbufar, for wine production.

The farm has over twenty hectares of Mediterranean forest with terraced terraces and dry stone walls, typical of the Majorcan mountain landscape for agricultural use. The farm has restored one of these terraces for mountain viticulture. The ecological vineyard, planted between 2020 and 2022, produces native grape varieties such as Malvasía de Banyalbufar (white), Black Mantle (red), and Callet (red), which are combined with other grape varieties such as Monastrell (red) and Syrah (red). The forest has passable roads for walking without leaving the property, making it perfect for a leisurely stroll.

Pool Area, Gardens, and F&BF&B

The estate's pool, situated between the gardens and the "Honesty Bar," offers stunning views of the valley and vineyards. The pool area has comfortable loungers and adjacent grassy beaches, tables, sofas, and other furniture under the pergola sheltered from the sun. You can also enjoy the snack bar service with an appropriate musical atmosphere. And, last but not least, we were lucky enough to be able to taste Rondaia's first wine and found it juicy, delicious, and perfect for the weather.

Verdict

If you are looking for a tranquil, modern place to stay during your time of Mallorca and happen to share a love for wine and viticulture, Rondaia will feel like paradise for you. Everything is perfect: From the location between vineyards and mountains in the Serra de Tramuntana in Mallorca to the wonderful, high-quality design that surrounds the buildings, interior, and landscape. The staff is incredibly welcoming and warm, making guests feel like they’re staying with their wealthy friends on a countryside estate. With stunning views from all the terraces, gardens, and pool area, as well as wonderful wine, Rondaia is one of the most memorable and welcoming places you’ll ever stay, and I highly recommend it.
