For my birthday this year, I wanted to do something a little different.
Originally, I had my sights set on a full-on tropical escape — somewhere like St. Lucia, with beach cocktails, turquoise water, and not a single plan beyond lounging. And while I did end up making it to the Caribbean (more on that in another post), my route there took an unexpected but surprisingly fun turn through Charlotte, North Carolina.

I’d never been, and since I’ve made it a quiet mission to visit all 50 U.S. states, this felt like the perfect excuse to cross another one off the list. It was just one night, but sometimes that’s all you need to get a feel for a place — especially when you land somewhere with character, good food, and a hotel that instantly makes you feel like you’ve arrived.

First Impressions

I’ll admit, North Carolina wasn’t high on my radar. If you’re already on the East Coast, a road trip through the Carolinas is appealing, but coming from California? Not the first place I’d think to stop. But sometimes those unexpected stops are the ones that surprise you most. I was curious, open-minded, and ready to see what Charlotte was all about.

It turns out, there’s a lot more charm here than I expected. The city feels clean, modern, and easy to navigate — but still holds onto a sense of history and pride. One little detail I loved? Charlotte is named after Queen Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz (yes, from Germany!), the wife of King George III. That’s where the nickname “The Queen City” comes from. You’ll see subtle nods to that royal heritage throughout — crown symbols on street signs, elegant flourishes in the architecture, and a general sense of grace woven into the city’s design.

We got into Charlotte on a Saturday afternoon and headed straight to the hotel. Our Uber driver was super friendly — one of those locals who just starts chatting right away. Somewhere along the ride, he told us that The Ivey’s used to be a department store. “Back in the day, people came uptown to shop there,” he said. (Apparently it’s uptown, not downtown — noted.)

That little detail made me even more curious, and once we arrived, it all kind of clicked. The Ivey’s has this old-school charm that instantly makes an impression. You can feel the history in the bones of the building — high ceilings, exposed brick, big dramatic windows — but everything’s been reimagined in this chic, boutique-y way.

Inside, it felt like a mix of vintage elegance and modern flair. Think velvet furniture, moody lighting, gold accents, and a few little nods to Charlotte’s “Queen City” nickname — nothing over the top, just subtle touches that made it feel stylish without trying too hard. Honestly, it felt like stepping into a very polished version of the past, with a strong sense of place.

Birthday Suite Vibes

We were in the King Executive Suite for the night, and honestly, it was perfect. The bed was massive — one of those you could sink into and never leave — with crisp white linens and the kind of pillows you keep fluffing because they’re just that good. The room itself felt both elegant and lived-in, with vintage-inspired wallpaper, floral details, and little nods to the hotel’s department store past. Even the antique-style acessoires added a bit of character without feeling staged.

And while this was a hosted stay, I always keep it real — and The Ivey’s really delivered. Everything felt thoughtfully designed, from the cozy lighting to the super soft towels. It was one of those rare hotel rooms that actually made me want to stay in for the night, which felt like the best kind of birthday luxury.

Charlotte Food & Drink Highlights

We didn’t have much time to explore, but we certainly made the most of it. First up was a happy hour at Sophia’s Lounge, the hotel’s bar named after Queen Charlotte. From 4–6pm, they offer a complimentary happy hour for guests — curated wines, champagne, and great vibes. I went with a California Chardonnay (of course) and ended up staying for more cocktails later because they were just that good.

For dinner, we found La Belle Helene, a French brasserie that transported me straight to Paris. The ambiance, the food, and the little Parisian touch in the middle of Charlotte made for a perfect evening.

But the real gem of the night was The Blue Door, a hidden speakeasy-style bar. The menu was inspired by U.S. cities, and I loved how every drink told a different story. I had the “Charleston” — a vesper martini with onion-washed gin (yes, it sounds strange, but it was delicious) and a cheese cracker on the side. It was the kind of place where every cocktail was crafted with intention, and I was hooked.

The Morning After

The next morning, we had a lovely room service breakfast served on a silver tray, which was the perfect way to end our stay. Sadly, we had to rush to the airport, but if we had more time, I would have loved to sip coffee slowly in bed and enjoy one more morning in Charlotte.

Charlotte, you were a pleasant surprise. If you find yourself passing through, don’t skip it — this charming Southern city is worth a visit, especially if you’re staying somewhere as unique and welcoming as The Ivey’s.
